Water Polo West Announce RDC and Team BC

Updated: 7 days ago

Water Polo West is excited to introduce the Regional Development Centre (RDC) and Team BC program. In line with Water Polo West's new Long-Term Athlete Development Model, the RDC will provide high-quality training for all eligible BC athletes. Through the RDC, Water Polo West will deliver the provincial team program in the 13U, 15U, 17U and 19U age groups.

Primary objectives of the RDC are to monitor athlete development and wellbeing, address performance gaps, and provide a pathway for athletes working towards selection for Team BC and/or Water Polo Canada Age Group National Team programs (AGNT). Please note, attendance at RDC is a pre-requisite for selection to any Team BC program and athlete tracking/reporting for AGNTs will be managed soley through the RDC. While COVID-19 will limit training and competition to within BC and Canada for now, the long- term vision for the RDC and provincial team is to participate in various events, domestic and international, where athletes can represent BC and experience high-quality competition. Due to COVID-19, the RDC and Team BC programs will be introduced and delivered in a phased approach that follows provincial health orders. Given the current restrictions, the focus for the RDC and Team BC is to connect with BC athletes, benchmark fitness, and introduce them to the athlete monitoring process. There will be 3 fitness combines throughout the water polo season: Fall (September/October) - Fitness Benchmarking Winter (January/February) - Mid-season Progress Assessment Spring (March/April) - Final Fitness Assessment In general, the Regional Development Centre will support athletes in the following areas:

  • Athlete monitoring

  • Fitness testing

  • Strength and conditioning

  • Mental health and performance

  • Sport nutrition

  • Recovery and injury prevention

  • Post-secondary transition and scholarships

Please note that the RDC schedule will depend on registration demand per age group and gender. The initial goal is to provide each gender-specific age group with a session to complete baseline fitness assessments. Please note, the RDC schedule for 13U and 19U will be released in early October.
