History of Water Polo in BC

Although water polo was played in the early 1900's in Vancouver, it was in the 1950's that water polo, supported by the Canadian Amateur Swimming Association, began to be played regularly and a senior men's league began.

The British Columbia Water Polo Association was founded in 1967 to promote, develop and administer the sport of Water Polo in the province.

In 2018, the member clubs formed Water Polo West. The new association was recognized as British Columbia's official Provincial Sports Organization (PSO) for water polo on January 29, 2019 by Water Polo Canada. WPW is also recognized a by viaSport, the provincial government's lead delivery agency for sport programs.

Starting as a small but enthusiastic group of clubs, Water Polo West has grown to over 1,000 participants of all ages and abilities throughout British Columbia.
